Family Dentistry Questions

Studio City, California

Not all general dentists offer preventative care and treatment for the whole family. At Smiles by Sands, we are proud to specialize in family dentistry, helping children, adults and elderly adults maintain healthy teeth and gums.

How does family dentistry differ from general dentistry?

General dentists are focused on performing dental services to diagnose and treat problems occurring with the teeth, gums and even jaw. The goal is ultimately to educate patients on proper oral hygiene to help prevent serious deterioration of the teeth and gums. Many general dentists are comfortable working on adults but find it more difficult to provide the necessary level of care for children.

Family dentists provide the same level of care as general dentists, but for a broader range of patient's ages. Like the name implies, the whole family, from children to older adults, can visit the same dentist in a family dentistry office.

What are the advantages of going to a family dentist?

A family dentist can become a trusted and familiar professional for all members of the family. Parents can set a good example for their children by visiting the family dentist on a regular basis and creating a positive association with the dentist.

In addition to general dental care, family dentists also provide:

  • Education for parents to help them foster a lifetime of good oral hygiene in their children as well as themselves
  • Fun and engaging movies, toys or music to make the visit enjoyable for children; and, more importantly, make them want to come back
  • Instruction on the proper methods to brush and floss effectively
  • Special dental sealants to protect teeth from cavities
  • Education on how a healthy diet and lifestyle can positively impact oral health
  • Patient and caring methods to help first-time patients become comfortable with the check-up process
  • Effective procedures to treat the effect of aging on teeth and gums

What age should children start visiting the dentist?

There are different viewpoints on what age a child should begin visiting the dentist. At Smiles by Sands, we provide dental care for patients who are 3 years of age and older. However, if parents suspect that there is a dental problem that demands attention prior to the child's third birthday, the staff at Smiles by Sands will happily assess the situation and provide care if necessary.

How often should family members visit the dentist?

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that people of all ages visit the dentist every six months for a dental check-up, which can include cleanings, exams and oral cancer screenings.

Good oral health begins with education, and Studio City, California dentists Dr. Jamie Sands and Dr. Jason Sands are trained to provide the entire family with the means to a beautiful, healthy smile. For a free family dentistry consultation, please contact our office today.
