Endodontics

Studio City, Valley Village, Sherman Oaks, Burbank, North Hollywood

Times are changing, especially in the world of endodontic therapy. Thanks to ongoing research and development of endodontic techniques and technology, a diagnosis of “root canal” is no longer as dreaded as it once was.

Today, root canals can be performed painlessly with little time in the chair and very minimal discomfort.

The root canal treatment is the most common form of endodontic therapy, a dental specialization concentrating on the tooth root and dental pulp, the connective tissue that nourishes the tooth and keeps it healthy. Endodontists are dentists who have received extra endodontic therapy training and now focus solely on this aspect of dental care.

A root canal may be needed if there is infection in the dental pulp. While the ideal situation is to be able to keep the dental pulp intact and functional, if the tooth nerve suffers damage, a root canal may be the only way to save the tooth from extraction.

Reasons for endodontic therapy:

Tooth infection – Infections in the tooth root can cause abscessing and pain, and lead to irreversible nerve damage.
Tooth decay – If a cavity is not caught soon enough, the bacteria can work it’s way down to the tooth root and endanger the blood vessels and nerves.
Tooth injury – If a serious injury causes damage to the tooth nerve, the tooth may be in danger.

At Smiles By Sands, we have an endodontic specialist in our office who does a wonderful job of solving tooth root infections with pain-free root canals. During your visit with our experienced endodontist, your condition will be reviewed and a treatment plan will be created with your optimal dental health as the priority.

Not all patients with tooth root problems will need a root canal. During root canal therapy, an endodontist safely removes the diseased pulp and replaces it with a special, biocompatible filling material. This material keeps the dental canal in good shape and allows the tooth to function despite the lack of a nourishing tooth root. A temporary filling is placed until you can meet with your dentist for a crown placement.
