What to Do in Case of a Dental Emergency
We all know that dental treatment is best when preventative. We all hope that following good preventative care, we will not suffer any dental emergencies, but sometimes things happen. If you have a dental emergency, you might not know what to do, but here is a quick guide for responding to:
Loose, injured or broken teeth
Make an appointment with your dentist.
Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area. Use cold compresses on the area to keep any swelling down. If a tooth gets knocked out, place it in a cup of water and call us immediately.
Bleeding
Make an appointment with your dentist.
Clean the area gently with a cloth, then apply firm pressure. Bleeding that does not stop may be a sign of a serious condition: go to a hospital emergency room immediately.
Gum injuries
Make an appointment with your dentist.
Rinse with warm SALT water. If pain persists, you can use a topical analgesic, such as Anbesol, available at pharmacies and supermarkets. Never put aspirin or any other painkiller not specifically designed for dental use against the gums near aching tooth because it may burn the gum tissue.
Loose crowns or implants
Immediately make an appointment with your dentist.
A formerly secure crown or implant that has suddenly become loose may be an indication of an underlying problem. To prevent further damage to the crowned tooth, it is very important to get the crown back in position as soon as possible. A loose implant must also be addressed with haste, since a missing tooth can cause shifting of other teeth and a change in the overall bite.
Severe Toothache
First, make an appointment with your dentist.
Severe pain may be caused by food particles in a cavity. First, clean your mouth by rinsing it with warm water. Repeat every hour or as needed to ease the pain. Gently use an interdental cleaner or dental floss ensure that there is no food or other debris caught between the teeth. Although washing the area may relieve the problem temporarily, it will eventually need to be treated with white composite fillings.
Dr. Jamie Sands and Dr. Jason Sands can treat severe dental emergencies. If you need emergency care, contact Smiles by Sands today.
